July 11, 2004

Had fun on the 4th, and just got back from the Northwest EAA Fly-in in Arlington, WA.  First time I'd been, it was a blast!  Was there friday and saturday.  Monique finally had a chance to see the plane we're building (before this, all she had seen was a couple of pictures).  Jeremy was with me all friday.  The Long-EZ's caught his eye.  If anybody has one they want to get rid of, I'm sure he'd be willing to take it off your hands.  Of course, he has $0 to his name, so it would have to cost a dollar or less.  News of note: NSI, who makes a Subaru conversion, isn't planning to put anything together for the -10's either.  That leaves Crossflow at this point.  After Oshkosh I should know more about their plans.

Got the rest of the 1004 inspar ribs cleaned up, then cleco'd everything together.

I guess spending time at Arlington motivated more than just me...

Hehe, those guys that do the soldering iron trick on the blue plastic must used straight edges, because neither of us could keep a straight line.  Ah well, at least it's functional.  The directions said to remove all the plastic right away, but I've resisted doing that to items still being stored.  During a talk put on by one of the Van's staff at Arlington, he talked leaving the plastic on for protection as being okay, so I'm going to go ahead and do that.

Both skins have the rivet lines cleared...here I'm putting the skins into the cradles.

The nose ribs are in place.  The other side looks like this one.  Not enough space in the frame to shoot the whole thing w/o backing so far that you wouldn't be able to tell what the picture was about.

Forward spar cleco'd in place.  Good time to have the cradles unclamped...makes it a lot easier to align each side with the spar.

I finally get to put the -14 & -15 stringers to use.  They are cleco'd together with some of the holes final-drilled.

Everything up to the rear spar is in place.  Yes, I used a lot of cleco's.  Far more than necessary.  And yes, my hand hurt afterward!  Since this thing isn't jigged, I want to make sure that everything is as straight as possible so I filled in a lot of the holes.

Tomorrow I'll get the rear spar in place, but it's after midnight at this point, so I'm going to bed.
