January 25, 2004Note: I'm going to try putting the text that accompanies each picture above the picture rather than below it, and see if I like that better. My eldest got behind on his homework last week, and so has had ZERO time to help out (the slacker!). So, I decided to get started on the rudder whilst I wait for him to help me finish shooting the VS. This is the way it comes
After pealing off the blue covering, I marked the area (right side of photo) to be removed.
And here it is after cutting, deburring, etc.
The other rudder rib, with the blue covering off, lines marked for removing excess material.
This is why it's so hard to get work done sometimes! This is the view from the basement shop. You can see the berms from the last ice rink we cleared. Absolutely gorgeous day!
Ah well, back to work...this is the rib after cutting, deburring, etc.
I forgot to shoot the shear clips before separating them and cleaning them up. A disk sander is invaluable at cleaning up the little tabs that held the pieces together. For the ribs in the pictures above, the belt sander worked very well.
Seven stiffeners, all the same.
After slicing & dicing, we get the different sized stiffeners. Not hard, just time consuming. Kind of a nice way to spend a lazy sunday, tho.
Bottom rib, cleco'd together for #30 final drilling.
Control horn is now match-drilled in place.
The first of the stiffener/shearclip assemblies. The plans weren't clear because of the single view when it says to label them right and left. The symbology they use to denote bent pieces doesn't indicate which way the piece is bent. They just show it as if it had been flattened out. Sooo, the one's I labeled 'right' should have been 'left' and vice-versa. It's pretty freakin' obvious once you start assembling them and really looking at it. There are two cleco's shown on the left side of the picture. Only the forward one gets final-drilled, the one farthest to the left doesn't get riveted, it's just there to help things line up.
Tomorrow I'll be working on assembling the stiffener assemblies.
