February 27, 2005

Okay, finally got some work done!  No pictures (battery was dead in the camera) unfortunately.

The shop is finally cleaned up, and all of the little projects are out of the way.  Jeremy and I dug out the right HS and shot the rivets for the HS-905 nose ribs (the internal one's).  The external one's were squeezed last summer.  These suckers are a pain!  Basically, the ribs don't fit the skin curve all that well, and so you tend to wind up with gaps between the flanges and the skin.  Only way around this is to somehow clamp the flange to the skin.  I'd read a tip on the RV-10 builders list about using a rubber squeegee and drilling a hole and then using the friction to help keep the parts pulled together.  I didn't have an extra squeegee, but a thin piece of wood worked just as well.  Only downside was that after every rivet you had to make a new piece of wood.  I did that on the left HS.  For this one I bought a cheapy squeegee, broke the rubber out of it, and drilled a hole.  It worked great for holding the parts together.

Even better, after so many months off Jeremy hadn't lost his touch and we were able to nail the rivets w/o any real problems.  Now I'm set up to put in the HS and start that attaching.
