February 18, 2004

Here's the fan in the window assembly for venting the area.  My mask takes care of any fumes while painting (can't spell nuthin'!), and this keeps any smell from leaving the shop and traveling upstairs.

Bottom rudder rib, with the two halves riveted together.  Now that the evil of painting is done for a while, back to the fun of building!

The control horn with the plate nut riveted into place

The upper reinforcement plate cleco'd into position.

6 of the holes have been filled.  The two that are still cleco'd are used to secure the nut plate.  After I'd squeezed the 4 rivets in the corners I wondered whether I shouldn't have turned the rivets the other way.  Structurally it doesn't make any difference, but I was thinking about the looks.  Then I decided that since the flange rivets would have the shop heads on this side, and the roll of the skin would cover it, that it didn't make any difference and left it.

Tada!  Nut plate in position.

While it looks the same, this is a shot of the reinforcement plate mid-way up the spar.  You can see that the proportions are a bit different (it's not just camera perspective).  Since I'd already shot the different steps of the upper plate, and this is the same sequence, I just shot the final product.

Poor picture, but you can barely see the rivets sticking up thru the holes.  They are taped in place and are ready to have the stiffener put on and be back-riveted in place.

Stiffener set into position

And riveted in place.  I love back-riveting.

3 of them are done.  I got a bit trigger happy on a couple of rivets securing the 2nd from the bottom stiffener, so I had to drill those out and re-rivet them.  Good news, those were the only two I screwed up the whole night!

The left skin is all stiffened!

Tomorrow I'll get the right one knocked out.  Progress is slow, but at least it's moving along during the week.
